Background information
Match stick is a slender piece of wood which comes from a tree.
Limewater is a colourless chemical that is used to test for the presence of carbon dioxide.

Lets do the experiment below to find out what will happen when we burn the match stick.



Process skill: Inferring-What gas is produce when burning takes place.
Objective: To demonstrate that burning produces carbon dioxide.
Procedures:
  1. Label the two bottles 'A' and 'B'.
  2. Dro a burning match stick into bottle A.
  3. Allow the match stick to extingush in bottle A.
  4. Then pour 20ml of limewater into each if the bottles, A and B.
  5. Swirl both the bottles a few times.
  6. Observe the limewater in both the bottles.
Safety precautions:
  • Ensure that there are no flammable materials around the area where the experiment is going to be performed.
  • Always take care when using naked flame (lighted match).
